Products & Options
Product is a plan you sell...
Products and groups #
A product is a plan you sell: for example "Starter hosting" or "Home fibre 20 Mbps". Products are kept in groups (such as "Shared hosting") that make up the shop and the order form.
For each product you set its name and description, its prices for each billing cycle and currency, setup fees, and whether it needs a domain. Open Billing > Products.
Each product also has a Provisioning page, where you choose the server module that sets it up when it is paid and enter that module's settings (the cPanel package, the router profile and so on). See Servers and provisioning modules.
Add-ons #
An add-on is a separate extra with its own line on the invoice: extra email accounts, a dedicated IP. A customer can add or cancel it without touching the main service.
Bundles #
A bundle sells several things as one: products, add-ons and a domain, at a fixed price or at a discount split by share. They renew at their shares.
Configurable options #
Settings > Configurable options lets one plan be sold in more than one size. An option is one field on the order form, such as Memory, with choices under it, such as "8 GB" and "16 GB".
Types #
| Type | The customer |
|---|---|
| Dropdown and Radio | picks one choice |
| Checkbox | picks any number of choices |
| Quantity | picks one choice and a number, between a minimum and maximum |
| Text | types free words (up to 500 characters); it has no price |
Prices #
Each choice is priced per currency and per billing cycle, with an optional setup fee. A price of zero means "included at no extra charge". A cell with neither a price nor a setup fee withdraws the choice for that cycle and currency. A currency with no typed price is converted from the default currency.
A choice is part of the plan's price, not a line of its own: nobody cancels the memory in their VPS and keeps the VPS.
Which products offer it #
An option group is attached to the products that offer it. One group can be used by many products.
How a choice reaches the server #
A choice can carry a value for the server module, for example 8192 for "8 GB". A field can name the module setting it sets, for example memory_mb. When the service is created, its module is built with that setting taken from the customer's choice instead of the product's:
- a dropdown or radio gives the choice's value;
- a checkbox gives the ticked values joined by commas;
- a quantity gives the number, times the choice's value when that is a number (three choices of "10" gives 30).
Some modules also read an option by its exact name. The MikroTik queue module needs an option named exactly Static IP; the RADIUS module reads Calling-Station-Id to bind a device. See the module's section in Servers and provisioning modules.
Changing and deleting #
- An option or a choice cannot be deleted while any service was configured with it.
- A live service can be moved to another plan or other options for a price, on its own billing cycle and currency.
- Staff can apply a new option price to existing services, a change at a time, with a notice period.
Selling checklist #
- The product has a price for every cycle and currency you sell it in.
- It has a server module and its settings, if it is set up automatically.
- Its options have prices for the cycles you offer.
- You have placed a test order and watched the service get created.
